What is a full right goalie? I have been asked that several times! A full right goalie is a goalie, who wears the blocker on their left hand, and their glove on their right. For whatever reason, there aren’t many full right goalies out there! There are only a handful of NHL goalies including Louis Domingue and Steve Mason who are full right goalies. With not so many full right goalies, there are some pros and cons to being one! Check them out below!
Pro
- Cheaper equipment – Because there isn’t a lot of full right goalies, there is usually some pretty good deals on gloves, blockers, and sticks.
- Throwing off shooters – Some shooters will try and shoot at a regular goalie’s blocker side will usually still shoot for that same side. For a full right goalie, that puck will usually end of into their glove instead of being, “waffle boarded away!”.
Cons
- Not every brand makes a full right model – While most major brands make equipment for both hands, smaller companies such as Tour and Hockey Tron, do not make full right gloves and blockers.
- Not every store has full right stuff or a lot of it in stock – Sometimes, it’s best to call ahead or order online, as most hockey stores do not carry a lot of full right equipment.
- Shooters who go glove all the time on regular goalies – If the shooter can shoot well and is used to going glove side on a regular goalie, that is your blocker side. It is sometimes harder for goalies to mover their blocker hand as fast as their glove, thus creating a harder save opportunity.

I would argue cost is a con. Supply is low, (as noted in the article) making them harder to find which means they’re more expensive. Trying to find anything on the used market is very difficult. Also fewer manufacturers mean less competition to drop down prices of new equipment.
